“Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. ” (Ephesians 4:15-16 NIV)
You may remember in your younger days having your mom, dad, or another adult tell you that it was time to ‘grow up’. Growing up isn’t easy, especially if we do not have a strong role model to follow. It seems more and more like the good strong role models are dwindling in the world around us. This coincides with the growing immaturity in more and more people. We may even recognize immaturity in our lives at times. It may show up in our relationships with our spouse, our children, the person we would like to marry, or even relationships at church or work. Instead of remaining calm and loving in all circumstances we allow anger, selfishness, and unforgiveness to take hold.
Paul, challenged the people of Ephesus, and this passage challenges us today to remember that we do have a perfect role model in Jesus Christ. In Christ all believers are part of the same family, and as such we should grow and mature in Christ-like love and care for one another. We should learn to ‘turn the other cheek’ instead of seeking to get even or to get revenge. We should love others above our own selfish desires and wants, just as Christ loved us enough to die to give us hope and new life.
Christ is the example we follow. It is only when we refocus our lives in Him that we will truly grow up in maturity in our Christian walk. We will then shine His love into a world that is dying for the touch of such mercy and love every day.
