Disturb us Lord, For Sometimes We Need It

In 1577, Francis Drake set out on behalf of England.  History reminds us that England and Spain were at odds, and leading into war.  Drake like many others became a sea captain, who attacked the Spanish Main, to give the gold to the coffers of England.  It was part of the overall military strategy of the time to weaken the enemy and bring wealth to their homeland.

Drake prepared to leave the docks of Portsmouth England never knowing the extent of the adventure in journey he and his crew were about to embark on.  The would not only bring over half a million pounds sterling back to the Queen, but in running from the Spanish ships Drake he would be the second captain to circumnavigate the globe.  He also went further up the coast of California than anyone of his time, wintering near what is today San Francisco. All of this would lead to his knighthood, and being a trusted military commander for Queen Elizabeth.

Enough of the history lesson you are saying.  Where is the spiritual hope I came here for?  Drake gave a very deep prayer, as he left Portsmouth on what would be the journey that changed his life forever.  His prayer below was a challenge to reach out in trust and faith, as they journeyed forward.

Disturb us Lord

Disturb us, Lord, when
We are too well pleased with ourselves,
When our dreams have come true
Because we have dreamed too little,
When we arrived safely
Because we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, Lord, when
With the abundance of things we possess
We have lost our thirst
For the waters of life;
Having fallen in love with life,
We have ceased to dream of eternity
And in our efforts to build a new earth,
We have allowed our vision
Of the new Heaven to dim.

Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,
To venture on wider seas
Where storms will show your mastery;
Where losing sight of land,
We shall find the stars.

We ask You to push back
The horizons of our hopes;
And to push into the future
In strength, courage, hope, and love.

Attributed – Sir Francis Drake -1577
I think in our lives we too often are too close to the safe harbors of life and faith.  We may hear God’s call to go visit a friend, to help the homeless, to tell someone else of God’s love.  Yet, we let fear surround us and keep us from taking any step of faith.  We fear failure.  We lack trust.  It may cause us to miss opportunity, or even prevent the transformation of our lives or blessing others.
Today read this prayer again.  Read it slowly.  Ask God what areas of your life He is challenging to expand?  Where in your life do you need to reach out into the world around you?  Where do you need to leave the safety of the harbor for the adventure of the life God intends for you?
Keep on the journey with Jesus,
