Joshua 1:9 New Living Translation (NLT)
9 This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
What is courage? I asked some young people recently if courage simply means that we jump into a situation with both feet? Is courage simply acting without thinking about the consequences?
No. Courage is doing the right and needed thing even while knowing the consequence and the needs at hand. Courage sees what must be done and does it.
I have a couple of friends who are or have been emergency workers. People in fire and rescue know the trouble they face, they know the needs at hand, they know the risk. Even when knowing all these things they act in ways that are heroic, because they do what is needed.
Joshua was told to have courage, but it is not a courage in self, or in his own ideas. It is a courage that is based in God. Sometimes as we follow God we need to have courage to address changes in our lives. Sometimes we need to step out to do God’s work and will to help others. These can be scary times, but God can give you courage to carry on.
Trust in God for your courage today in your journey with Jesus.
