Matthew 5:3 (NIV)
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
You might look at these words and wonder why would Jesus want me to be sad? Why would Jesus say we are to be poor in spirit? To be “poor in spirit”, is not about a physical economy, but an economy of the Spirit.
Jesus tells us that those who are humble, who recognize just how poor we are spiritually, and turn to God will have the Kingdom of heaven given to us. Just imagine, as we look at the perfect love and blessing of God, and then back at our own sinful lives. We see just how poor spiritually we are.
However, in this season of hope and expectation we can also look to Jesus and know that in him is the forgiveness of all sins. In him is the power to overcome sin and death. In him we can know life, and that life is eternal.
While some may be filled with sadness at this time of year, with the shortening of days, or the missing of loved ones. We can all be filled with hope in knowing Jesus came to be with us, to save us, and is preparing a place in eternity for us right now.
May God bless your journey through the Advent season.
