Philippians 2:6-7 (NIV)
6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
In 1995 Joan Osborne released a song, that at the time caused many Christians to question it at first, the song was “What if God was one of Us”. In the chorus of the song she sing, “What if God was one of us, a slob like one of us.” Some people may find this offensive, but I find it hopeful, because God is one of us.
He put all of glory aside to live as one of us. This means he became a human, and lived, walked, worked, and experienced life just like one of us. He was rejected by the social elite and the religious leaders. He was rejected by those who thought they were educated enough to know who God was. He did all of this to reach out to average ordinary people like you and me.
So, if God Had a name, what would it be? Isaiah gives us some names for Jesus in chapter nine: Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God. He is also called the king of kings, and Lord of Lords. However, when I look at the manger at the start of his life and the cross at the end of his earthly ministry, I am reminded that He is called Savior. He is called friend, and Father.
Know today that your Father in Heaven is striving to reach out to you. Even now. Accept His love and be blessed in knowing Him.
